Short answer (TL;DR)
Digital marketing for small business starts with three things: a website that answers customer questions, a free Google Business Profile, and a small, measured Google Ads budget. A realistic starting point is about $610 a month including ad spend. Add Facebook and Instagram ads, email and deeper SEO only after the first two channels bring in inquiries. The order matters more than the number of channels.
What is digital marketing and what does it mean for a small business?
Digital marketing (also called online marketing) is everything you do so customers find you, trust you and call you online. It covers search engines, ads, social media, email and local maps.
For a small business owner, one difference matters. Many articles list twenty channels. You need three to five, and you need to know when each one adds value.
Search is still the main entrance. According to Backlinko, the first organic result gets 27.6% of clicks and the top three together get 54.4%. Ahrefs studied 14 billion pages and found that 96.55% of pages get no traffic from Google.
Which digital marketing channels make sense for a small business?
The table compares channels by cost, time to results and fit. Dollar amounts are approximate conversions from our euro price list; see the Novus Agency contact page for a current quote.
| Channel | Monthly cost (approx.) | Time to results | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Website | from $65 a month, or from $980 one-time | 2 to 3 weeks to launch | Everyone. Without it, other channels have nowhere to send people |
| SEO | $220 / $440 / $770 | 4 to 12 months | Businesses with a long time horizon |
| Google Business Profile | $0 (a few hours of work) | first movement in weeks | Local services, trades, restaurants |
| Google Ads | $330 to $550 ad spend + management from $220 | immediately, stable after 30 to 60 days | Anyone who needs inquiries this month |
| Meta ads | $275 to $440 ad spend + management from $220 | days to weeks | Visual services, local reach |
| tool + 2 to 4 hours of work | first sequence within 30 days | Businesses with existing customers | |
| AI search | no separate cost, part of SEO | months | Businesses with clear, quotable content |
Website, SEO and advertising costs come from our price list. Ad budgets and time to results are rough ranges, explained in the sections below. The 2 to 4 hours a month for email is our estimate for a small list. For Google Ads budgets, see how much Google Ads costs for small businesses. For Meta, see Facebook and Instagram ads for contractors. The SEO timeline follows our guide to SEO basics for small business.
Website and SEO as the foundation
Every other channel sends people to your site. If it loads slowly or does not answer the question, you pay for clicks that leave. On our START plan, ongoing SEO is already part of the monthly subscription. Standalone SEO starts at about $220 a month.
Google Business Profile
A contractor or a salon gets most customers from nearby. A Google Business Profile is free. We explain how to reach the top three on the map in Google Business Profile optimization.
Business advertising: Google Ads
For someone searching "plumber near me", a Google ad is the shortest path to a phone call. Campaign setup starts at about $320, and management at about $220 a month. The ad budget is separate. Below roughly $220 a month a campaign does not collect enough data, so a start between $330 and $550 makes sense.
Instagram advertising
Instagram suits businesses that look good in a photo: hair, carpentry, landscaping, auto body. Meta serves Instagram and Facebook from the same account and budget, so most small businesses do not need separate campaigns.
Facebook advertising
Facebook remains a useful way to reach people within about 20 miles of your business. Setup and management are covered on our contact page, and we describe campaign types in the guide on Facebook and Instagram ads.
Email and AI search
Email is the channel where you already know the customer. It is cheap, but it must be set up correctly: with recipient consent and SPF, DKIM and DMARC records. The process is in email marketing for small business. AI search is not a separate channel. Google's own guide to AI search stresses that the same SEO basics apply to AI features. Clear, verifiable answers on your page help both.
Digital marketing cost: a sample budget for a small business
Take a business with one local service location. The goal: inquiries within 90 days. This is an example, not a promise. Figures are approximate conversions of our price list.
- Phase 1, first three months. START website at about $65 a month, Google Ads with about $330 of ad spend and about $220 of management. Roughly $610 a month in total. One-time setup is about $320 for the site and about $320 for the campaign.
- Phase 2, from month four. Add Meta ads with about $275 of spend and about $220 of management. Roughly $1,100 a month in total.
- Phase 3, once both channels are stable. Email to existing customers and a deeper SEO plan from about $220 a month.
So digital marketing cost is not one number. It is a sum you increase only when measurement shows the previous step works. The key question is how much one new customer can cost you. A plumber whose job is worth $330 and a shop selling a $16 product get very different value from the same budget.
How to build a marketing strategy in five steps
A marketing strategy for a small business is not a 40-page document. It is a sequence of decisions. The recommended order:
- 1. Set a goal. How many inquiries a month do you need? Three or thirty is a very different start.
- 2. Fix your site and profile. A page with a clear offer, a price or range, a phone number and a form. Plus a complete Google profile.
- 3. Turn on measurement. Without tracking calls and forms you do not know what works. Start with Google Analytics 4.
- 4. Launch one paid channel. Usually Google Ads. Stay with it for at least 60 days.
- 5. Add the next channel. Only when the first one delivers, add Meta, email or bigger SEO.
Do you need a digital marketing agency?
You need a digital marketing agency when you have no time for ongoing ad or SEO management, or you cannot set up measurement yourself. For the first steps you do not need one: the profile, site basics and a first email can be done in one afternoon.
When choosing an agency, watch for three things. Prices should be public or clearly explained. Reports should talk about inquiries, not just clicks. The contract should not be long without a reason. The 12 questions to ask are in how to choose a web design agency. To discuss your situation, use the Novus Agency contact page.
Common digital marketing mistakes
The most common mistakes look much the same in every industry.
- Too many channels at once. The budget spreads thin and none gets enough data.
- Ads without a landing page. A click on an ad for a specific service must land on that service's page.
- No measurement. If you do not log calls and forms, you are judging by feel.
- Campaigns shut off after two weeks. The first month is a learning phase.
- Neglected profile. Unanswered reviews and outdated hours lose customers before they see your site.
