SEO Basics for Small Business: How to Rank on Page 1

Why does SEO matter for small businesses?

72% of consumers Google a business first before they walk in the door. If you are not on page 1, you do not exist. SEO is the highest-return marketing channel there is: a customer who finds you organically is 5-10x more qualified than one who clicks a paid ad.

1. Set up your Google Business Profile

Free, 30 minutes of work, huge impact.

  • Go to google.com/business
  • Enter your business name, address, phone number, hours
  • Add 5+ photos (office, team, past projects)
  • Pick the right category
  • Verify with the postcard (Google mails it to your address)

Once verified, you can show up in the "local 3-pack", the top 3 local results for searches like "your service + your city".

2. Optimize your page titles (title tags)

Every page needs a unique title in this format: "Main keyword - Secondary | Your business"

Bad example: "Home - Mike Johnson LLC" Good example: "Plumbing Services Austin - 24/7 Repairs | Mike Johnson"

3. Write meta descriptions

A meta description does not directly affect ranking, but it does affect CTR (click-through rate). Better CTR means better rankings long term.

A good description (155 characters max):

  • Includes the keyword
  • Names a concrete benefit
  • Has a call to action ("Call now", "Book today")

4. Give every page one topic

One URL = one main keyword.

Bad: one page covering everything (services, pricing, contact). Good: a dedicated page for each service ("Plumbing Services", "Electrical Services", "Water Heater Repair").

Each page should run 500+ words, with the keyword in the title, the first paragraph, and the body.

5. Local SEO: put your city in there

If you serve a local area, include your city name in:

  • Title tags
  • H1 headings
  • Meta descriptions
  • Body content (3-5 times)
  • Footer address
  • Schema markup

Example: instead of "Plumbing Services", write "Plumbing Services Austin" or "Plumbing Services in the Greater Austin Area".

6. Collect Google reviews

5+ reviews with a 4.5+ average means noticeably higher rankings in the local pack.

The playbook:

  • Send every customer a review link right after the job is done
  • Message template: "Thanks for your business! If you were happy with the work, a quick review would mean a lot to us: [link]"
  • Reply to every review (positive and negative)

7. Start a blog

Every article is one more keyword you can rank for.

Blog ideas for a local contractor:

  • "How much does water heater replacement cost in Austin?"
  • "When to call a plumber: 5 signs it is an emergency"
  • "How to winterize your bathroom"

1 article per week means 50+ new keywords over a year.

8. Get backlinks from local sites

Backlinks (links from other websites) are one of the top 2 ranking factors in SEO.

Free sources for US businesses:

  • Yelp, list your business
  • Better Business Bureau, get accredited or at least listed
  • Angi and Thumbtack, list your services
  • Your local Chamber of Commerce directory
  • Nextdoor and Apple Business Connect

9. Page speed is a ranking factor

Google does not reward slow sites:

  • Load in under 3 seconds (ideally under 2)
  • Optimize images (WebP, not PNG; 200 KB max)
  • Cloudflare CDN (free)
  • Lazy load images below the fold

Test your speed at pagespeed.web.dev. Aim for a 90+ score on mobile.

10. Technical SEO basics

Do not skip these:

  • sitemap.xml, an index of every page for Google
  • robots.txt, tells bots what they are allowed to crawl
  • Schema markup, structured data (rich snippets)
  • Mobile-first, Google indexes the mobile version
  • HTTPS, a secure connection (free with Let's Encrypt)
  • Canonical URLs, prevents duplicate content

How long until I see results?

  • Month 1-2: setup, first pages indexed
  • Month 3-4: first results on long-tail keywords
  • Month 6: stable position for local terms
  • Month 12: top 3 for your target keywords (if you did the work)

SEO is a marathon, not a sprint. Start as early as you can. Every day without SEO is a day your competitors take your customers.
